So often, we confuse acceptance with approval. I get hung up on it myself. People often mistake that if we accept a situation, it means we somehow like it or are ok with it. It doesn’t mean that at all. Seeing things as they are is acceptance. Liking the way things are is a whole other story.
When we practice acceptance, it allows us to move into a solution. Sometimes those solutions equate to terrible choice A or terrible choice B. But they are solutions none-the-less. Otherwise we get lost wrestling with things, wish they’d change, or looking for reasons why. This is lost energy and keeps us stuck in the problem.
There is a Zen saying: “This being the case, how shall I proceed?” Try it. It can be a turning point that moves you into acceptance, even when you don’t like the situation.
This being the case, how shall I proceed?
